LIGHT NIGHT 2015

Light Night

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. John 8:12

On October 31st, Polesworth Baptist Church held its second Light Night for the community. Halloween's origin can be found in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (meaning 'end of summer'). For the Celts who celebrated their new year on November 1st, the day marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter, the end of light and the beginning of darkness, the end of life and the beginning of death. Many people choose to opt out of traditional Halloween activities for various reasons, so it was fantastic to be able to celebrate this night as one of life and light rather than of death and darkness.

David Gillett - Bishop of Bolton - said, "Christianity needs to make clear its positive message for young people - for many centuries there has been a positive Christian slant on Halloween. Eight hundred years ago the pagan autumn festival in Britain was christened Halloween - the holy night of blessing before All Saints' Day. I believe it is high time we reclaimed a Christian stake in this night. It can be a night of light and joy and hope, expressing the confidence we have in Christ who is the light of the world. Let's re-christen Halloween!'

Polesworth Baptist Church offered our community a night of fun, games and craft with something for everyone. Nigel was the BBQ master and outside fun included apple bobbing, marshmallow toasting and doughnut eating from the string. Hot refreshments were also on offer and the hot choclate proved very popular. Inside the warmth of the hall with some background music was an explosion of families - young people were busily engaged in activities and parents and friends were chatting. Finding the lost sheep went down a storm as children raced around the hall calling out the names of our knitted friends who had been placed in various hiding places. There were crosswords and word-searches, decorating CDs with shiny beads and stickers, making beaded bracelets and necklaces, decorating paper plates with stickers and pictures and some brilliant face painting. The young people came up with some really creative ideas and it was fantastic to see so many families enjoy the event.

It was great to hear that families had seen our social media adverts and to see new faces. We are always seeking new ways to share the Gospel and churches across the country are entering a new era of creative evangelism as it's more important than ever to show Jesus' love and light to others. It was a brilliant event enjoyed by everyone. We had some great feedback posted on our Facebook page and we very much hope to see families back with us next year and that they will spread the word that Polesworth Baptist Church is the place to be on Light Night!
